“Downton Abbey” star Michelle Dockery thanked fans for their sympathy Tuesday upon the death of her fiance, John Dineen.
“The family is very grateful for the support and kindness they have received but would kindly request that they are left to grieve in private,” Dockery’s representative said in a statement.
Public-relations executive Dineen, 34, died Sunday morning at the Marymount University Hospital & Hospice in his native County Cork, Ireland, of a rare form of cancer, People reports. He was a senior director with FTI Consulting in London.
Dockery who turned 34 on Tuesday, had kept the relationship largely private, though the couple had been photographed together at such events as the Venice Film Festival and Wimbledon. She told Red magazine in an interview posted Nov. 27, “I’ve got people around me who I can turn to for advice: my mum, and my partner, John.”
The two reportedly began seeing each other in 2013 after being introduced by Dockery’s castmate, Allen Leech.
A funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, according to British media.
Dockery has been nominated for three Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe for her performance as Lady Mary Crawley in the British period drama, which airs in the United States on PBS.
