Sarah Hyland: Ex Matt Prokop choked me, was verbally and physically abusive

Sarah Hyland, who plays eldest child Haley Dunphy on ABC's "Modern Family," has obtained a temporary restraining order after alleging ex-boyfriend Matthew Prokop choked her, cursed at her and threatened to set her house on fire.

TMZ.com said that according to court documents it obtained, Hyland, 23, claimed Prokop, 24, was both physically and verbally abusive for the bulk of their five-year relationship, which reportedly ended last month.

The documents said that during one argument in May, Prokop pinned her against a car while choking her and delivering a string of obscenities. "His grip was so tight that I could not breathe or speak. I was scared and in fear for my life," Hyland testified.

She asked castmate Julie Bowen, who plays her mother, to help "peacefully end the relationship," the documents said. But Prokop, arriving at Hyland's home and seeing Bowen and others, "ran outside into the backyard and began screaming" and then tossed a lighter at Hyland.

At some unspecified point in the relationship, TMZ said, Prokop also threatened to set one of Hyland's homes on fire and threatened to harm her dog. After the breakup, he "relentlessly bombarded me with vile, threatening and emotionally disturbing texts and voice mails including his own suicide threats," Hyland testified.

A Los Angeles judge ordered Prokop to remain 100 yards from Hyland and her dog.

"The documents speak for themselves," her attorney, Lee Sherman said in a statement to CNN. "Out of respect for the court, the process and all parties, I have advised Ms. Hyland not to comment on the matter. We request that you respect the parties' privacy during this time."

A Prokop representative did not respond to comment requests from multiple news outlets.
