Sean Penn, Leila George finalize divorce
Oscar winner Sean Penn and Australian actor Leila George are officially single.
According to TMZ.com, the couple, who wed in July 2020, finalized their divorce Friday. George originally filed for divorce from Penn in October 2021. The two have no children together and, according to court documents obtained by People magazine, neither is seeking spousal support. They cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.
Penn, 61, and George, 30, had been seen together as recently as January, spending the New Year's holiday in Australia.
The two-time Academy Award winner told Hollywood Authentic magazine, in an interview published earlier this month, that the still loves George but that he was selfish throughout their union (the two began dating in 2016).
"There’s a woman who I’m so in love with, Leila George, who I only see on a day-to-day basis now, because I ... [messed up] the marriage," he said in the interview. "We were married technically for one year, but for five years, I was a very neglectful guy. ... I allowed myself to think that my place in so many other things was so important, and that included my place in being totally depressed and driven to alcohol and Ambien at 11 o’clock in the morning, by watching the news, by watching the Trump era, by watching it and just despairing."
Penn, who is working on a documentary about Ukraine for Vice, added, "I don’t know what’s going to happen with us, but I know that this is my best friend in the world and definitely the most influential, inspiring person, outside of my own blood, that anybody could ask to have in their life. So, now, when I wash the dishes, I don’t answer my phone. If I’m with my wife for a day, I don’t have my phone on, even though I’m juggling a lot of things. I don’t juggle them better by taking more calls. I can have my phone off and not watch the news for 12 hours now. And even when I’m stressed, I’m never stressed the way I used to be."
Penn previously was married to Madonna (1985-89) and to Robin Wright (1996-2010), with whom he shares daughter Dylan, 30, and son Hopper, 28.
