'Survivor's' Hatch faces prison Monday
You're fired? No, you're incarcerated.
Richard Hatch, a contestant this season on "The Celebrity Apprentice," was scheduled to report to prison Monday for his continuing failure to pay federal income tax on his $1 million prize for winning the first season of "Survivor," in 2000.
After having already served 3 years in prison for tax evasion, Hatch, now under supervised release, did not refile his 2000 and 2001 tax returns as ordered.
Judge William E. Smith of the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island, told Hatch on Friday, "You can continue to proclaim your innocence. You don't have the option of engaging in this type of game or negotiation with the court. It needs to be a severe punishment. That's the only thing that will deter you in the future."
He then sentenced Hatch, 49, of Newport, R.I., to 9 months in prison. Hatch's Internal Revenue Service tax debt has risen to $2 million.
NBC spokesman Sean Martin told The Associated Press that Hatch's legal problems would have no effect on "The Celebrity Apprentice."
