Us Weekly said Thursday that the strain of a long-distance relationship caused the split between Quinto, 36, and Groff, 28, noting Quinto, who plays Mr. Spock in J.J. Abrams' 2009 and 2013 "Star Trek" movies, was frequently away filming. The magazine said the breakup was amicable.

Groff appeared in several 2010-12 episodes of "Glee" as Jesse St. James, star singer and later coach of Vocal Adrenaline, the rivals to New Directions. This fall he begins production as star of an as-yet-untitled gay-themed HBO dramedy.

"I'm incredibly happy, I'm incredibly lucky," Quinto told Out magazine last September when he confirmed the relationship, adding, "I had to do a lot of work [in therapy] to really get to a place where I was able to show up to a relationship with someone who was actually capable of being in one -- and that took a lot of trial and error."
