Moms finally get a day off on Mother's Day -- well, sort of. (We know, the work is never done). This weekend, there are plenty of ways to show her a good time -- from a visit to local wineries to a rockin' sock hop dance, and even a tea party.
MUSEUMS WITH MOMMY
The Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington offers free admission to moms and grandmothers on Sunday, May 13, from 11-5 p.m. Children under 10 are also free (631-351-3250, heckscher.org).
Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium also features free admission for mothers on Sunday, May 13, from 10-5 p.m. in Cold Spring Harbor. The only caveat? You've got to bring the kids ($4 ages 3-12, 516-692-6768, cshfha.org).
If mom's the top, head to Coe Hall at Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay where Chamber Players International will perform a free, one-hour concert of Cole Porter music at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 13. Bring a chair, blanket and outdoor picnic to the West Portico of the historic mansion-turned-museum ($8 parking, 516-922-8678, plantingfields.org).
HIT THE WINERIES
Chocolate and wine are almost as classic as mothers themselves. Taste this winning combo 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, May 12, and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, May 13, at Sherwood House Vineyards in Jamesport. There, you'll try four truffles by artisanal chocolatier Vosges, that feature flowers like orchids and roses, along with four wines for $25 per person. Live acoustic music adds to the ambience from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, May 12, (631-779-2817, sherwoodhousevinyards.com).
Laurel Lake Vineyards will offer a 1 p.m. wine and chocolate pairing class Sunday, May 13, in the Laurel tasting room. The event includes tasting of two reserve wines maturing in oak barrels. Sommelier Roxanne Browning will lead attendees through a tasting of organic chocolate from countries like Grenada and Costa Rica, paired with four wines. Bring lunch and stay to hear live rock music covers until 5 p.m. Admission is $30 a person and must be paid in advance by phone by Friday, May 11 (631-298-1420, llwines.com).
In Riverhead, mamas can test their singing prowess at Martha Clara Vineyards 1-4 p.m. Sunday, May 13, with free karaoke. DJ Phil emcees the friendly contest on an outdoor pavilion, while mothers sip on a free glass of rosé (631-298-0075, marthaclaravineyards.com).
'50s DANCE PARTY
If Mom is ready to shake, rattle and roll, bring her to a sock hop dance, 7-11 p.m. Friday, May 11, at the Riverhead Polish Hall. A classic car display near the entrance sets the stage for this '50s dance, which features a swing dance lesson and live performance by the eight-piece Doug Ferony Big Band -- covering tunes by Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin. Burgers, hot dogs and fries, a root beer soda float, jukebox cake and poodle skirt cookies are included in the $55 ticket price. Moms may buy raffle tickets for gift certificates to restaurants or spas. The woman and man who don the best retro outfits each wins a $50 cash prize (631-259-1385, lwyf.org).
TEA TIME!
Looking for an elegant mommy and daughter(s) affair? The Garden City Hotel is hosting a Mother's Day tea party at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12. Choose from three themed menus: a traditional high tea with an assortment of sandwiches, pastries and fresh scones with Devonshire cream and house-made preserves ($34); a "Royal Tea" that adds a glass of Champagne and strawberries with crème chantilly to the traditional menu ($44); or a chocolate tea featuring sandwiches, Callebaut hot chocolate, marble pound cake, scones, Belgian chocolate brioche, assorted chocolates and truffles ($39). Reservations are required (516-877-9385, gardencityhotel.com).
