Long Island Pride celebrations in Long Beach

It’s a three-day celebration three decades in the making.

Tens of thousands of people are expected at the 2017 Long Island Pride celebration, taking place this weekend, June 9-11, at a new location for the first time in 26 years.

Pride on the Beach debuts in Long Beach, moving from its longtime home in Huntington.

The festival is to be the largest beachfront celebration of its kind in the country, says David Kilmnick, chief executive of the LGBT Network, an association of nonprofit organizations that runs support centers in Woodbury, Bay Shore and Sag Harbor.

Past Pride celebrations have been a single afternoon consisting mainly of a parade and festival. But this year, guests will have close to 30 events to choose from throughout the weekend — including a ceremony honoring the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando in which 49 were killed and 58 wounded last June. Several events are centered on the beach, with admission via the city’s standard $15 daily access pass.

Here are the highlights:

BOAT PARADE

4-6 p.m. Saturday, June 10, Reynold’s Channel Esplanade

The first floating parade sets sail with rainbow-trimmed sailboats and cruisers from Knickerbocker Sailing Association, a nonprofit LGBT boating club.

5K RUNS

Saturday, June 10, Laurelton Boulevard and West Broadway

The Nature’s Bounty Co. timed 5k ($50, 7:30-10 a.m.) spans the length of the boardwalk. There’s a kids fun run ($10, 8:30-8:45 a.m.) and an untimed family fun run (7:30-9 a.m.), taking place on a shortened course of three blocks.

BEACH PARTY / FASHION SHOW

Noon-5 p.m. Saturday, June 10, the beach at Long Beach Boulevard

Come prepared to dance as DJs spin live at the beach party headlined by DJ Mary Mac, fresh off Madonna’s “Rebel Heart” tour. The latest in swimwear, sunglasses and bling will be highlighted at 3 p.m. on stage in a fashion show.

CONCERT ON THE BEACH

1-6 p.m. Sunday, June 11, the beach at Long Beach Boulevard

Rachel Platten, whose inspirational hits include “Fight Song” and “Stand by You,” will headline a concert on the beach. Joining Platten will be the tribute band The Lady Gaga Experience featuring Lady DoppelGaga, Nick Tangorra and The Janes. A second stage, dubbed Pride Stage at the Carnival, provides 14 hours of nonstop music from more than a dozen Long Island-based artists.

BEACH CLUB EXPERIENCE

Noon-5 p.m. Saturday and 1-6 p.m. Sunday, the beach at Long Beach Boulevard

VIP passes for a pop-up beach club are available for $85 Saturday and $110 Sunday and include private restrooms, appetizers, six drink tickets and stagefront access to the beach concert / dance party. Food delivery from local restaurants is available.

27TH ANNUAL LONG ISLAND PRIDE PARADE

Noon-2 p.m. Sunday, June 11, Broadway from Laurelton Boulevard to Long Beach Boulevard

Gilbert Baker, the recently deceased creator of the iconic rainbow flag commonly associated with the LGBT pride and social movements, is among the honorees of the Pride parade. WNBA and Center Moriches Hall of Famer Sue Wicks and New York City councilman Daniel Dromm, a Long Island native, will serve as grand marshals. More than 85 groups are registered to march.

MEMORIAL PADDLE-OUT

2:30-3 p.m. Sunday, June 11, the beach at Long Beach Boulevard

A paddle-out is a tradition to remember surfers who have died, but it’s been adapted by the Long Beach surfing community to honor victims of last year’s Orlando nightclub shooting. More than 1,500 are expected to gather on the beachfront and put flowers in the ocean. To sign up, visit prideonthebeach.org

CARNIVAL

7-10 p.m. Friday, June 9; 1-10 p.m. Saturday, June 10; and 1-6 p.m. Sunday, June 11; West Broadway and Riverside Boulevard. Free admission.

Newton Shows, the oldest family-owned and operated carnival company on Long Island, brings its carousel and other rides and games for all ages. There’s also an international food court on site.

MARKETPLACE

8 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday, June 11, between Edwards Boulevard and Long Beach Boulevard

The market fair features a record 100-plus vendors, exhibitors and shops — many from the Long Beach area — at this all-day affair.
