The real-life horror story about the slayings of 10 women whose bodies were found on Gilgo Beach in 2010 and 2011 serves as the basis for a fictional retelling of the case in "The Long Island Serial Killer," a new DVD that came out on Tuesday, Aug. 25.

The video, from Wild Eye Releasing, focuses on a female college student who crosses paths with a serial killer believed to be behind the deaths of 17 prostitutes. Though much of the movie takes place in the suburbs of New York City, it follows the killer as he leaves a trail of bodies along Gilgo Beach. The cast is made up of newcomers and the movie marks the feature debut of director Joseph DiPietro.

While this is the first dramatization of the case, which still remains unsolved, it has been profiled on several TV programs including a 2011 episode of CBS' "48 Hours Mystery" and a 2014 edition of the Investigation Discovery series "Dark Minds."
