The Chace is over: "Gossip Girl" cutie Chace Crawford, 24, stepped down last week from Paramount's planned remake of the 1984 movie "Footloose," in which he would have played the Kevin Bacon role. Entertainment Weekly, which first reported the news Monday, said the studio is now likely to cast an unknown, possibly with a nationwide public search.

Us magazine quoted a source Tuesday who said, "Chace is going back to 'Gossip Girl' in July. Paramount was supportive of his decision. They aren't even in preproduction."

Crawford's exit follows "High School Musical" star Zac Efron's, who left "Footloose" last March.

On a brighter note, the film about teens who dance around an anti-dancing ordinance did get a creditable new director to replace Kenny Ortega ("High School Musical" trilogy). Variety reported Monday that "Hustle & Flow" and "Black Snake Moan" writer-director Craig Brewer has taken over.

Paramount told Variety casting to replace Crawford would begin immediately, with shooting scheduled to begin this summer.
