The first trailer for "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 2" shows that the franchise intends to go out with a bang.
"Mockingjay -- Part 2" is the last in the four-film series that launched in 2013 and helped make a star out of Jennifer Lawrence as the dystopian rebel Katniss Everdeen. Audiences and critics alike loved the hard-hitting first film and went even wilder for the second, but the somewhat talky third installment stumbled slightly at the box office. "Part 2" is the franchise's last chance to make an impact.
Judging by the trailer, "Part 2" will give viewers more of the spirited, fearsome version of Katniss that seemed to be missing from the previous film. She gets to rally the troops and lead them in a charge against the tyrannical Capitol ruled by President Snow (Donald Sutherland). Katniss makes it clear from the trailer's first few seconds that the talking is over: "Nothing good is safe while Snow is alive," she says. "But I can't make another speech about it."
Mostly absent from the trailer are Julianne Moore as rebel leader Alma Coin and Philip Seymour Hoffman as PR strategist Plutarch Heavensbee -- two figures that were responsible for much of the wonky dialogue in the last film. Instead, we see rebel soldiers preparing for battle, dodging explosions and running from a tsunami of black goo.
The "Part 2" trailer also makes sure to touch on Katniss' various emotional storylines: a hug for Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), a meaningful look from Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth), a moment of tenderness with little sister Primrose (Willow Shields). Still, the message that comes through the loudest is the promise of action and spectacle. Sam Claflin, as Finnick Odair, closes the trailer with an enigmatic announcement: "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 76th Hunger Games."
"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 2" is scheduled for release Nov. 20.
