Movies to watch on St. Patrick's Day
"Gangs of New York" (2002) John C. Reilly, Liam Neeson and Brendan Gleeson star in this historical drama set in lower Manhattan in the mid 19th century, when Irish immigration and the Civil War created tensions.
"The Brothers McMullen" (1995) Filmed in Valley Stream, this movie tells the story of three Irish brothers from Long Island, played by, from left, Michael McGlone, Edward Burns and Jack Mulcahy.
"The Boondock Saints" (1999) Hailed as heroes after accidentally killing two Russian mobsters, the McManus twins (Sean Patrick Flanery, left, and Norman Reedus) believe it is their calling to rid Boston of evil.
"Michael Collins" (1996) Liam Neeson plays Michael Collins, a 1920s Irish leader known as the Lion of Ireland, who helped found the modern state of Ireland and was a leader in the Irish Republican Army. This biographical film also stars Julia Roberts and Aidan Quinn.
"The Crying Game" (1992) Forest Whitaker, left, plays a British soldier captured by an Irish Republican Army soldier (Stephen Rea) in this psychological thriller, set during a time when the IRA was equated with terrorism.
"In the Name of the Father" (1993) is based on the true story of the Guildford Four, a group falsely accused in deadly bombing of pubs in Guildford, England, that were claimed by the Irish Republican Army. The film stars Daniel Day-Lewis as Gerry Conlon, one of the four.
"Waking Ned Devine" (1998) David Kelly stars as one of two best friends, the other played by Ian Bannen, who seek to claim the winnings of an Irish lottery when they find the true winner dead with the ticket in hand.
"The Boxer" (1997) After 14 years in prison for his involvement with the Irish Republican Army, Danny Flynn (Daniel Day-Lewis) returns to the violent streets of Belfast, Northern Ireland, and to his former sweetheart, Maggie (Emily Watson), who's now the wife of another prisoner with a teenage son.
"The Departed" (2006) Leonardo DiCaprio plays an undercover cop who infiltrates a gang in Boston at the same time the gang's boss plants a mole (Matt Damon) within the Massachusetts State Police.
"The Wind That Shakes the Barley" (2006) Liam Cunningham stars with Cillian Murphy and Padraic Delaney in this Irish war film about two brothers who join the Irish Republican Army in the early 1920s.
"The Quiet Man" (1952) John Wayne plays a retired American boxer who returns to his Irish roots and falls in love with Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara).
