WHO Johnny Depp

THE MOVIE "The Lone Ranger"

THE DEAL Depp, along with co-star Armie Hammer and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, blamed American critics for the box-office failure of "The Lone Ranger" in a recent interview with Yahoo! Movies UK-Ireland. "I think the reviews were written seven to eight months before we released the film," Depp said. Hammer claimed that critics "decided to slit the jugular of our movie." Bruckheimer struck a positive note, predicting that critics would "review it in a few years and see that they made a mistake." The widely panned, $215-million Western has so far grossed just $86.7 million domestically, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.

WHO Alec Baldwin

THE MOVIE "Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me"

THE DEAL Chiemi Karasawa's directorial debut is a documentary on hard-charging, 88-year-old actress Elaine Stritch. Though long known as a Broadway icon, her career was reinvigorated (yet again) by her Emmy-winning role on NBC's comedy "30 Rock" as the nagging mother of Alec Baldwin's Jack Donaghy. Baldwin will host a screening of the film as part of the Hamptons International Film Festival's ongoing SummerDocs program.

INFO Monday at 7 p.m., Guild Hall, 158 Main St., East Hampton. Tickets are $22; 631-324-0806, guildhall.org

THE MOVIE "Shun Li and the Poet"

THE DEAL It's actually an Italian film about the friendship between a Chinese immigrant (Tao Zhao) and a Yugoslav fisherman (Rade Serbedzija, of Angelina Jolie's "In the Land of Blood and Honey") who live in a small village on the Venetian lagoon. Film critic John Anderson, a regular Newsday contributor, will hold a Q & A after a screening as part of the ongoing Furman Film Series.

INFO Thursday night at 7:30 at Squire Cinemas, 115 Middle Neck Rd., Great Neck. In Italian and Mandarin with English subtitles. Tickets are $15-$20; 516-829-2570, goldcoastfilmfestival.org
