"The Canyons," the independent erotic thriller starring Lindsay Lohan and adult-film actor James Deen, will have its world premiere July 29 at the Film Society of Lincoln Center in Manhattan.

The Film Society, which made the announcement Tuesday, said director Paul Schrader would appear afterward in a discussion with New York Film Festival program director Kent Jones. Schrader, best known as the screenwriter of Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver" and the director of  "American Gigolo" (1980), "Cat People" (1982) and "Auto Focus" (2002), raised money for "The Canyons" using the online crowd-funding site Kickstarter.

IFC Films will release "The Canyons" theatrically Aug. 2 in Toronto and at the IFC Center in Greenwich Village, expanding to Los Angeles and other cites the following week. It will also be available on video-on-demand on Aug. 2.

In the upcoming issue of the Film Society's magazine Film Comment, Schrader said Lohan was initially resistant to X-rated star Deen. "In fact, she was trying to get him out," Schrader said. "The first read-through, I looked over at her notepad and she was making a list of other actors who could play these roles. I said, 'Lindsay, I'm not gonna let you recast this movie.' She was always wary of Deen. A little bit because of the porn thing, but also her fear was that he would steal her thunder."
