Lindsay Lohan has begun production on her first feature film since 2013, the actress announced via social media.

"My first day on my new film!!!!" Lohan, 29, wrote on Instagram Monday, captioning a a three-quarters profile close-up of herself. "Will be sending a sneak peak of my character this week" for a film titled "The Shadow Within." Tuesday morning she added a selfie of herself in a black top with heavily red puckered lips, writing, "First day on set of my new film."

No further information about the movie was immediately available. The 1970 Japanese drama "Kage no kuruma" was released in the U.S. the following year as "The Shadow Within," and a 2007 supernatural thriller carried that title.

Lohan, originally of Cold Spring Harbor and Merrick, last starred in the low-budget feature "The Canyons," by writer Bret Easton Ellis and director Paul Schrader, in 2013. She has since made guest appearances on HBO's "Eastbound & Down" and CBS' "2 Broke Girls." Her most recent film, the 10-minute short "Till Human Voices Wake Us," about mermaid-like selkies, premiered at the La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival in July. As well, in fall 2014, she earned respectable reviews for her stage debut in a West End revival of David Mamet's "Speed-the-Plow."

The former child and juvenile star of popular films including "Freaky Friday" (2003) and "Mean Girls" (2004), has had a difficult transition to adult roles, hampered by highly publicized bouts with substance abuse, rehab, traffic accidents, arrests and jail time.
