Movie buzz: 3 new additions for 'Transformers 3'
WHO Ken Jeong
THE MOVIE "Transformers 3"
THE DEAL The omnipresent comedian who twirled naked through "The Hangover" and forced Paul Rudd to kiss his ring in "Role Models" will join the next installment of the toy-based movie franchise, according to Deadline.com. Jeong isn't the only new addition: John Malkovich and Frances McDormand are also on- board. Shooting begins next month.
WHO Popeye the Sailor
THE DEAL Sony Pictures Animation is hoping to turn the spinach-eating (but also pipe-smoking) cartoon sailor into a computer-animated 3-D movie, Variety reports. Plot details haven't been revealed, but the main characters will include Popeye's flighty girlfriend, Olive Oyl, his violent nemesis, Bluto, and adopted child, Swee'Pea. The last "Popeye" movie, Robert Altman's bizarre live-action version starring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall, was a notorious flop in 1980.
THE EVENT Stony Brook Film Festival
THE DEAL The 15th annual installment of the festival, scheduled for July 21-31, is accepting entries through May 1. There is no entry fee. The festival is known for a mix of foreign, independent and mainstream fare; last year's prize-winners included the Israeli film "For My Father" and the indie drama "Tickling Leo," produced by Mary Stuart Masterson.
INFO Formats accepted for projection at the Festival are 35 mm and beta, although DVDs are acceptable for entry purposes. The entry form is available at stonybrookfilmfestival.com.
