Neve Campbell, a mainstay of the "Scream" movie franchise since it debuted in 1996, says she is not returning for the sixth entry, due out next year.
"Sadly, I won't be making the next 'Scream' film," Campbell, 48, who currently stars in the Netflix series "The Lincoln Lawyer," said in a statement to Variety Monday. "As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to 'Scream.' I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise."
The horror-mysteries, in which she starred as Sidney Prescott and which also featured Courteney Cox and David Arquette in each entry, have generated a worldwide box office of nearly $745 million. The fifth movie, titled simply "Scream" like the original, was a hit this year, scoring a worldwide gross of $140 million on what Variety had reported as a $24 million production budget.
"It's been a very difficult decision to move on," Campbell's statement continued. "To all my 'Scream' fans, I love you. You've always been so incredibly supportive to me. I'm forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years."
After her announcement, Arquette, in an interview about a different project, responded to a query about Campbell's departure. "I'd love for her to be a part of it," the actor, 50, told ComicBook.com. "A 'Scream' movie without Sidney is kind of unfortunate, but I understand her decision. It's all a business in a way; they have to balance all these elements to fit a budget and produce a film. I get it ... [her character is] still alive! She [can] absolutely be in future ones, but I think it's up to fans to call for that in the future. … I respect her decision, for sure."
Campbell has not commented on Instagram, her sole social media.
