WHO Chris Pine

THE MOVIE "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit"

THE DEAL Paramount Pictures plans to release this action film in IMAX early next year, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Jack Ryan" is the fifth movie based on the fictional hero created by the late novelist Tom Clancy, while Pine ("Star Trek") will be the fourth actor to play him after Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. The movie's initial Christmas Day release was postponed after Paramount gave Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" that coveted slot; "Jack Ryan" is now scheduled for release Jan. 17.

THE MOVIE "12 Years a Slave"

THE DEAL The acclaimed biopic about a free black man (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who was sold into slavery led the London Film Critics' Circle nominations earlier this week with a total of nine, including for film of the year. But no single film is dominating the Oscar race yet. Previously announced awards for best picture have been all over the map: Toronto's critics chose the Coen brothers' music-themed drama "Inside Llewyn Davis," while the New York Film Critics Circle named David O. Russell's caper comedy "American Hustle," and the National Board of Review gave the honor to Spike Jonze's sci-fi romance "Her."
