Turner Classic Movies features MGM stars

With everyone from Gable to Garland on its roster, MGM boasted that it had "more stars than there are in the heavens" during its Hollywood heyday. Turner Classic Movies can make the same claim as its annual August festival, "Summer Under the Stars," gets under way next Friday with daily 24-hour movie marathons devoted to a particular star.
First up is Jane Fonda, TCM founder Ted Turner's ex, beginning with her debut, "Tall Story," at 6 a.m. Also on tap are Hollywood hunks (Paul Newman, Aug. 19), funny females (Carole Lombard, Aug. 10), sexy sirens (Sophia Loren, Aug.26), classic clowns (Charlie Chaplin, Aug. 14) and the just plain classy (Cary Grant, Aug. 13, and Audrey Hepburn, Aug. 22).
"Summer Under the Stars" 2014 appropriately includes 14 actors being featured for the first time, including wisecracking Thelma Ritter (Aug. 20), pinup girl Betty Grable (Aug. 30) and crooner turned tough guy Dick Powell (Aug. 25). And fans who've been writing TCM for years to get a day for debonair William Powell will finally get their wish on Aug. 9.
