On Saturday, the punk-prog quartet Brand New will co-headline a gig at Forest Hills Stadium with Modest Mouse. During the 21st century, Brand New -- whose members hail from Merrick and Levittown -- rose up from Long Island's underground to become one of the standard-bearers of emo, with critics and listeners drawn in by the band's ability to bring together crushing guitar riffs and naked emotion.

HAVEN'T HEARD THIS BEFORE Brand New experienced a commercial breakthrough in 2003, with the release of its textured, intricate second album, "Deja Entendu;" the video for the claustrophobic "Sic Transit Gloria . . . Glory Fades," in which frontman Jesse Lacey acts as a human voodoo doll, entered rotation on the then-rock-friendly MTV. Later that year, Newsday wrote about how Brand New was at the center of an "increasingly expensive" label bidding war; they eventually signed with Interscope, which released the chaotic, emotion-filled "The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me" in 2006.

IN BLOOM Brand New released "Daisy" in 2009, and its more collaborative songwriting process behind the album brought about increased complexity, including sonic surprises like the exploded-blues interlude "Be Gone" and the blown-out title track. But the band was feeling growing pains: "There may be some changes on the horizon," guitarist Vincent Accardi told Newsday around its release. "There is a feeling of this band not being the same band as it has been for the last years." That November, to put a cap on their tour, Brand New threw a homecoming party at Nassau Coliseum, headlining a one-day, two-stage festival that also included their Long Island compatriots Glassjaw.

WHAT'S NEXT Brand New has kept a relatively low media profile in this promotion-choked age -- although they've been using their Internet presence for good, taking a strong stand against ticket resellers looking to fleece fans. Late last year, the band played a smattering of shows looking back on their discography, which included a late-December gig at the Paramount, where they played "The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me" and "Daisy." In June the band posted online that they'd been engaging in "some writing, some recording, some new gear, some studio building." A few weeks later, a shot of band members in the studio popped up on the Brand New Instagram account, sparking speculation that the band's first album in five years might be on the horizon.
