Hear Taylor Swift's new single
The evolution of Taylor Swift continues with her new single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” (Big Machine). Oh sure, it’s another breakup song, but this one is anthemic in a slick pop way, rather than her usual modern country way.
Considering Swift co-wrote it with Max Martin and Shellback of Britney Spears fame, it’s kind of amazing that it still sounds like her – a super-glossy, beat-oriented, Avril Lavigne-ish version of her, but her, nonetheless. Part of T. Swizzle’s charm is the way she makes her songs sound genuine and conversational and “Never Ever” is no exception, even including a scrap of spoken-word dialogue about how the relationship in the song is “exhausting.”
What does this signal about her upcoming album “Red,” set for release on Oct. 22? Hard to say. Perhaps Swift is now ready to embrace her inner pop star? Perhaps she's ready to become a Kennedy?
“I called it 'Red' because of the tumultuous, crazy adventures in love and loss that it chronicles,” Swift says in a statement. “In my mind, when you experience love that's fast paced and out of control and mixes infatuation, jealousy, frustration, miscommunication, and all of those lovely emotions …in retrospect, it all looks red.”
