Is Rebecca Black, the 'Friday' video girl, for real?
Wait. Do people actually like Rebecca Black's music?
The 13-year-old from Los Angeles has become an Internet sensation for her cheesy YouTube video “Friday,” where she delivers heavily AutoTuned lyrics like “Yesterday was Thursday, Thursday, Today it is Friday, Friday ... Tomorrow is Saturday, and Sunday comes afterwards.”
“Friday” went viral last week, logging nearly 13 million views as people mocked it for Black's odd vocals and weird phrasing, as well as the low-budget video, filled with cliches, that came with it.
“Is this the worst music video ever?” asked Gawker. “Tosh.0” advised, “Songwriting isn't for everyone.” And “Mystery Science Theater 3000” comedian Mike Nelson, who is credited by many as the guy who started the attention snowball for Black, said “Friday,” created by the production team for hire Ark Music Factory, answers the question “What's the worst video ever made?”
It seemed like there was near-unanimous dislike for the clip. However, in a strong argument for the “there's no such thing as bad publicity” camp, “Friday” is now threatening to become a hit.
Since being released on iTunes this week, it has already reached #67 on the charts, ahead of new singles from Kenny Chesney and Rise Against, who will likely have the No. 1 album next week, and evergreen sellers like John Lennon's “Imagine” and The Black Eyed Peas' “I Gotta Feeling.”
So either thousands of people are spending 99 cents of their hard-earned cash to be annoyed or (gasp) Black is building a following for "Fun fun fun fun."
