Kanye West knows how to get attention.
When the rapper/fashion designer wants the spotlight, he will not be denied, as “Yeezy — Season 3,” his fashion show/album listening party at Madison Square Garden Thursday afternoon proved.
As is his style, Yeezy goes for shock value first. When the tents over the stages were pulled back, they revealed more than 1,000 models, all dressed in warm browns and reds, in the middle of The Garden surrounding two stages where a couple dozen models stood in West’s higher-end clothes.
Also part of the shock was West’s carefully curated guest list. “Season 3” marked the first public appearance of his brother-in-law, retired NBA star Lamar Odom, as he continues to recover from a near-fatal drug overdose in October. It also marked the public debut of West’s 2-month-old son, Saint, who entered the arena in the arms of mom Kim Kardashian, who wore a blond wig. West’s 2-year-old daughter, North, walked in with her aunt Kendall Jenner. Matriarch Kris Jenner and her former spouse, Caitlyn, also attended.
The Kardashians — Kim, Khloé and Kourtney — were impossible to miss, dressed in oversized white or pink faux fur coats. The same went for Naomi Campbell, also in an oversized fur, who was pretty much the only model to walk on the stage. Everyone else stood still, aside from rapper Young Thug, who sat down.
“I just want to bring as much beauty to the world as possible,” West told the crowd after the show.
And it was clear that the artist’s vision of beauty is as eclectic as his taste in music, with so many races in varying sizes represented in the show. The models paired nicely with the songs from “The Life of Pablo,” which West has modestly called “the best album of all time,” as they moved from hip-hop gospel to club bangers.
For the immediately memorable “Fade,” the camera fixed on the Kardashian sisters who danced to the track.
It all worked well, which is why when West begs for attention, lots of people are willing to give it to him.
The arena wasn’t big enough to contain his vision, so West decided to broadcast the launch live to movie theaters around the world. On Wednesday, he agreed to stream the extravaganza live on Tidal.
West was clearly thrilled about making his vision a reality, jumping up and down behind the soundboard as he played each new song.
“You gotta fight for every dream,” West said.
