Kesha, Pitbull the rage at Jones Beach
This Saturday, the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater will host a giant rager starring pop wild child Ke$ha and the ever-dapper MC Pitbull. Ke$ha's raunchy, debauched bent on pop manifests itself in gloriously hedonistic tracks like "Sleazy" and "Gold Trans Am." And in recent years, the Miami-repping Pitbull has dominated radio with up-tempo, glossy dance tracks like the chart-topping "Give Me Everything"; his current single, the Christina Aguilera-assisted, a-ha-inspired "Feel This Moment," peaked at No. 8 on the Hot 100. Here are three things to know about each.
KE$HA
1. Ke$ha's music is all in the family. Kesha Rose Sebert's mom, Pebe, wrote "Old Flames Can't Hold a Candle to You," which Dolly Parton recorded in 1980. It was a hit, going to No. 1 on the country chart, and Ke$ha covered it reverently on last year's "Deconstructed" EP. Pebe also penned a couple of tracks on her daughter's debut, "Animal."
2. Ke$ha had a stealth introduction to pop. Ke$ha's pop debut came as the uncredited hook girl for Flo Rida's stomping "Right Round," which topped the Hot 100 for six weeks in 2009. Since then, she's had two No. 1's of her own ("Tik Tok" and "We R Who We R"). Among her other chart successes: an appearance on Britney Spears' "Till the World Ends" remix -- she co-wrote that track from Spears' 2011 album, "Femme Fatale."
3. Ke$ha's TV show is a family affair. "Ke$ha: My Crazy Beautiful Life," which wraps up its MTV run on Tuesday, is partially the result of her brother (and sometime musical collaborator) Lagan Sebert following her around with a camera for two years.
1. Pitbull fights like a dog. Pitbull was born Armando Perez, but he decided to pick a stage name with more bite. In 2004, he told The Washington Post that he picked the pit bull terrier as his icon because "they bite to lock. The dog is too stupid to lose. And they're outlawed in Dade County. They're basically everything that I am." He's also known as "Mr. 305," which indicates an improving relationship with his hometown (it's the area code for Miami).
2. Playing "Six Degrees of Pitbull" would probably be very easy. In the past year, Pitbull has appeared on singles with Jennifer Lopez, Taio Cruz and Shakira, in addition to his recent hit with the big-voiced Aguilera. He's also rapped alongside Ne-Yo, Enrique Iglesias, Usher and -- wait for it -- Flo Rida.
3. Pitbull brought Miami heat to the Great White North last year. Pranksters' hijacking of an online campaign for Facebook likes resulted in Mr. 305 hopping a plane to the location of America's most remote Walmart -- store No. 2711, in Kodiak, Alaska. Pitbull didn't perform in Alaska, but he did get some bear repellent as a souvenir.
