Miley Cyrus is almost an adult, y’all. And like so many Disney teen stars before her, the 17-year-old Cyrus is out to prove it by being “controversial” in her new Gaga-influenced video, complete with sexy dance moves and shirtless dancers. However, unlike “…Baby One More Time” or “Genie in a Bottle,” “Can’t Be Tamed” (Hollywood) isn’t a breakthrough song. It sounds like a retread of Kristinia DeBarge’s “Goodbye,” with its stomping synths and AutoTuned vocals, made worse by blatant marketing-speak lyrics, “They try to change me, but they realize they can’t.” Instead of a declaration of independence, “Can’t Be Tamed” feels like Cyrus is simply crawling into a different box.
