MTV VMAs 2013 see Justin Timberlake win 4 awards, Miley Cyrus shocks

Step aside, Lady Gaga. There's a new shock pop princess at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Miley Cyrus shocked Barclays Center Sunday night with a sexy performance of her hit "We Can't Stop," which started with her dancing with giant stuffed teddy bears and ended with the 20-year-old former Disney star stripping down to her bra and panties.

But she didn't stop there. Cyrus then went on to sing with Robin Thicke on his smash "Blurred Lines" while she suggestively danced with him.

"Miley better get a damn pregnancy test after all that grinding," joked comedian Kevin Hart afterward.

Cyrus' display made Lady Gaga's much-anticipated world debut of "Applause" seem tame by comparison, even though she too ended her performance in her underwear. Gaga's artistic demonstration featured her changing into a variety of outfits as she sang.

Of course, the VMAs did hand out some prizes, as the first major awards ceremony held in Brooklyn. Justin Timberlake was the big winner, with three awards, including video of the year for "Mirrors," which also won best editing.

Timberlake also won the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award for his video work throughout his career.

His friend and collaborator Jimmy Fallon introduced him, calling him the "president of pop," adding later that "he's become a legend." Timberlake then delivered a lengthy medley of his solo work. The performance included the much-anticipated reunion of his group 'N Sync, in their first televised song together since 2003.

"It happened!" Fallon said of the reunion, while Timberlake caught his breath. "He's the best in the business."

"I don't deserve this award but I'm not going to give it back," Timberlake said, adding that half of the 14 Moonmen he won were "with those four guys over there," and that he shared the lifetime achievement award with his bandmates in 'N Sync.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis picked up three early awards -- including best hip-hop video and best video with a social message for "Same Love."

Macklemore called the song "the most important record" of all the songs he has written. "Gay rights are human rights, there is no separation," he said in his acceptance speech.

Bruno Mars landed two awards -- best male video for "Locked Out of Heaven" and best choreography for "Treasure." Austin Mahone won the artist to watch award.

Even the show's quieter moments had a bit of Brooklyn edge to them.

Taylor Swift enjoyed some sweet revenge, as she thanked the inspiration for her kiss-off song "I Knew You Were Trouble," reportedly One Direction's Harry Styles, who was in attendance, because it resulted in her winning best female video.

The screaming crowds lining Brooklyn's main streets around Barclays Center also had fun, especially those that lined the red carpet on Sixth Avenue for hours and the thousands under the Brooklyn Bridge to see Katy Perry's debut performance of "Roar."
