Paul Simon and his wife, Edie Brickell, who appeared together in court Monday on disorderly conduct charges following an argument, have recorded a reconciliatory duet.
"You share my heart," begins the twangy, country-inflected "Like to Get to Know You," posted Wednesday on Brickell's website. It continues, "You share my kids and my dog, but I swear I don't know you at all." The two ultimately sing how they wouldn't trade places with any other couple, and hope to get to know each other again.
Meanwhile, police reports obtained by local media yesterday shed more light on the incident. Singer Brickell, 48, on Saturday approached her husband in the recording-studio cottage on their New Canaan, Connecticut, estate "to confront Simon on something which he'd done that broke her heart," the report said. She did not give details. Brickell told police Simon "cannot handle being criticized . . . and became confrontational."
When Simon, 72, then shoved Brickell, "I slapped him," she told police, who noted a "moderate odor of alcohol" on her breath. Simon called 911 and hung up, leading to the police's arrival.
"It was a normal husband-and-wife discussion, and Paul didn't want to discuss it, and she wanted to discuss it," their attorney, Allan Cramer, told reporters outside Norwalk Superior Court after the couple's appearance there.
"He kind of tried to leave, and she kind of blocked the door," he said, adding, "Brickell is from Texas and he's from Queens. And you know what . . . there are ways of settling things down in Texas and there are ways of settling things down in Queens."
The couple are due back in court May 16.
