Stars take their summer fun onstage

Instead of lazing on a tropical island or jetting off to Europe, a number of actors are taking working vacations during their series' hiatuses with gigs on and off Broadway, in cabarets, in Central Park and on the East End.

Here are a few who will be having a wonderful time performing this summer and wish you'll be there to see them.

JESSE TYLER FERGUSON -- The "Modern Family" star will be treading the Bard once again. The actor, who has appeared in three of Public Theater's previous Shakespeare in the Park productions, takes on the role of the jester Trinculo in "The Tempest," which began previews Wednesday, May 27, and runs through July 5 at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Ferguson also will take part in "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" benefit performance featuring the original Broadway cast July 6 at The Town Hall.

JIM PARSONS -- The "Big Bang Theory" science geek earned raves for his previous Broadway ventures, "The Normal Heart" and "Harvey." Now he's back and playing the title role in "An Act of God," which opened Thursday, May 28 and runs through Aug. 2 at Studio 54.

ALAN CUMMING -- The great Scot from "The Good Wife" has played the Emcee in two different Broadway productions of "Cabaret." On Tuesday, June 2, he comes to the cabaret known as Cafe Carlyle with his show "Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs," which runs through June 13.

CHRIS NOTH -- The not-so-good husband from "The Good Wife" also has a summer job playing the lead in Classic Stage Company's production of "Doctor Faustus," which begins previews Tuesday, June 2 and runs through July 12. Noth's TV co-star Zach Grenier joins him in "Faustus" as Mephistopheles.

SUTTON FOSTER -- OK, given that her TV Land show "Younger" only had 12 episodes in its first season, Foster has more vacation time than the other stars on this list. Still, she's keeping busy with several projects this summer, including the Encores! Off-Center presentation of "The Wild Party" July 15-18, a concert with the New York Pops at Forest Hills Stadium on Aug. 6, and her one-woman show at Guild Hall's John Drew Theater in East Hampton on Aug. 9.
