Pet Rock Film Festival 2
Time for another Pet Rock Film Festival, where we hit you up with a dozen or so trailers for upcoming movies and rank them.
The guidelines for the PRFF are simple. We treat it like a trip to the movie theater. We watch the trailers once and then formulate an opinion about the movie based on what we see, whom we see and other generalizations based on our knowledge and moviegoing preferences. In other words, we pretend we're watching the previews before a feature film.
So get some popcorn (or gummi bears or whatever) and take a midweek trip to the movie theaters at your desk with the Pet Rock Film Festival. Then, vote on your favorites in the poll below. (See Pet Rock Film Festival 1 here.)
Movie | Release | Comment |
---|---|---|
"Fair Game" | Oct. 15 | Naomi Watts and Sean Penn bring life to the true story of Valerie Plame's outing as a CIA agent in this political thriller. |
"The Fighter" | Dec. 10 | The backstory of pro boxer "Irish" Mickey Ward, played by Mark Wahlberg, which overcomes the Christian Bale factor. |
"Red" | Oct. 15 | Bruce Willis as a retired CIA operative isn't a reach. Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren are. But it's a good reach, like sticking your hand in the jar to get that last cookie. Wait, there's more. John Malkovich! |
"Case 39" | Oct. 1 | Not a big Renee Zellweger fan, but the trailer makes this thriller intriguing. |
"Casino Jack" | Dec. 29 | Kevin Spacey as Jack Abramoff. Strong. |
"True Grit" | Dec. 25 | Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin, Matt Damon and the Coen brothers. Nice. |
"It's Kind of a Funny Story" | Oct. 8 | An original take on teen angst, with a prescription of Zach Galifianakis |
"Gnomeo & Juliet" | Feb. 11, 2011 | This movie will do for lawn gnomes what "Shrek" did for ugly green ogres. |
"Secretariat" | Oct. 8 | Diane Lane and John Malkovich will be good, as usual, but horse movies are rarely exciting at the box office. |
"Life as We Know It" | Oct. 8 | What does it mean about the movie when, 20 seconds in, you know how the trailer will end? Still, a few funny lines. |
"My Soul to Take" | Oct. 8 | Scrap the first 43 seconds of this trailer and maybe the next Wes Craven movie won't be too awful. But, I still know what you did last summer. |
"Saw 3D" | Sorry, just not my cup of tea. |
