Readers react to '2016: Obama's America' review
I had my say on Dinesh D'Souza's film "2016: Obama's America" when Newsday published my zero-star review on Monday. Now readers are having their say. Here are excerpts from email reactions to my review.
From Larry: Mr. Guzman's review was more revealing of his own political philosophy than enlightening about the movie, "2016." The tone of his article couldn't disguise his disgust for the movie or it's author. In fact it wallowed in his moral superiority .?.?. There is much in this movie to see regardless of ones political ideology.
From John: I just recently read your review of "Obama's America" and laughed at your no stars rating. It's apparent your just another one of Obozos puppets angry at the fact that someone has put some lemon juice in Obozos Kool-Aid!!
From Albert: I am reading your review of this movie and after I saw it yesterday I do not believe we saw the same movie. I can tell you are afraid of the truth and use your column to dissuade people from watching it.
From Robert: Seems your political slip is showing!
From VoteObamaOut: You are not a critic of film, but rather a critic of those who hold a point of view different from your own. I will not waste much time with you, other than to say that there is a reason why this movie is making money hand over fist .?.?. I will think of you on Nov. 6, 2012 and again as president Romney is inaugurated.
From George: Excellent review! I will be certain to go see the movie. I was going to wait for the movie about the OBL raid, but this one will get my money and my support.
From Frank: Is this the first time a no star movie was in the Top 10? My wife and I hope to see the movie tomorrow in Bellmore. I hope I don’t see you there picketing the movie. I get the feeling you will be voting for Obama. Could I be wrong?
From R: .?.?. If journalists like yourself had fairly vetted our president before he was elected .?.?. this movie would, in all likelihood, never have been made.
From John: .?.?. I will be taking my wife and three daughters sometime this week to see the flick. I am also wondering what kind of rating and starts you gave "Bowling for Columbine" and other Michael Moore "Art." I even saw "An Inconvenient Truth" and was amazed at how the falsely recording and highly editorialized "scientific data" was praised by much of Newsday.
From Tom: I am an independent voter deeply concerned about the direction that this president is taking our country. Your review is symptomatic of a dishonest media that refuses to be even handed in its coverage of political candidates. I would think that you would welcome a critical examination of the president. Writing the film off as simply "character assassination" is beneath your role as an honest critic.
I'll add a note on the star ratings that other political documentaries have received from myself and other reviewers. Ben Stein's "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed" received two stars, and Bill Maher's "Religulous" received one star, both from me.
"An Inconvenient Truth" received 2.5 stars, "Bowling For Columbine" received 3.5 stars, "Sicko" received 3.5 stars and "Fahrenheit 9/11" received 3.5 stars, all from other Newsday critics who preceded me.
