Super Bowl XLVIII: Bruno Mars, Red Hot Chili Peppers halftime show preview

Bruno Mars might not be a household name yet, but he will be after he headlines the Super Bowl halftime show.

At 28, the native of Hawaii becomes the youngest halftime performer since Justin Timberlake, then 23, took part in the infamous "wardrobe malfunction" show in 2004. However, Mars won't be stirring up controversy to get attention.

"My dream was not to get a day job, but to sleep, wake up and do my music," he told music industry trade magazine Billboard, which named him "Artist of the Year" for 2013. "Hopefully, my music does all the talking."

The R&B singer, who also impressed with his comedic timing as host of "Saturday Night Live," already has sold more than 115 million singles from a long string of hits, including two No. 1s from his most recent album, "Unorthodox Jukebox" (Atlantic). Both songs -- the ballad "When I Was Your Man" and the new wave-tinged "Locked Out of Heaven" -- are nominated for Grammys, with "Locked Out of Heaven" up for song of the year.

He won his first Grammy in 2011 for best male pop vocal performance for the love song "Just the Way You Are," after landing six nominations for his debut album "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" and songwriting and production work with CeeLo Green and B.o.B. He and his band The Hooligans are in the middle of a world tour that grossed $46.4 million last year and he has lined up pals the Red Hot Chili Peppers to perform with him during halftime.
