"Redwood," the tree-hugging Broadway musical starring Syosset's Idina Menzel, is about to get the ax three months earlier than planned.
Producers of the show — one of whom is Menzel — announced Friday that "Redwood" will play its final performance on May 18. The news comes as a bit of a surprise after a March announcement that "Redwood" had been given a six-week extension and would be closing on Aug. 17.
“While we had of course hoped for a longer run, we're incredibly grateful to have been able to tell this beautiful story for the time we've been given," producers Eva Price and Caroline Kaplan said in a statement. “ 'Redwood' has been a labor of love since the very beginning of this process, and we are immensely proud of the incredible work our cast, crew, and creative team have wholeheartedly poured into this production.”
The closing notice comes one day after the Tony Award nominations were revealed, with "Redwood" ignored in all categories. At closing, the show will have played 127 performances, including 17 previews.
In the production, Menzel plays a successful gallery owner who leaves her family and career behind and winds up in Northern California, where she finds comfort in the majestic forests. This was the "Wicked" star's first time on Broadway since her Tony-nominated performance in "If/Then" from March 2014 to March 2015.
"Redwood" premiered at California's La Jolla Playhouse in March 2024 where it enjoyed a six-week run. The show opened at Broadway's Nederlander Theatre on Feb. 13 to mixed reviews though both Menzel and the show were praised by The New York Times.
Menzel, 53, helped conceive the project with director Tina Landau ("Floyd Collins") and is credited for contributing additional material. The songs are by Broadway newcomer Kate Diaz.
