Another iconic movie is on the road to Broadway.
“Pretty Woman,” the 1990 smash rom-com that shot Julia Roberts to fame, will be adapted for the stage, opening in New York in the fall of 2018. Samantha Barks, best known for her performance as Eponine in the 2012 film “Les Misérables,” will make her Broadway debut as Vivian, the street walker who falls for the businessman who hires her — Richard Gere in the movie, Steve Kazee, who won a Tony for “Once,” in the musical.
“From the first time I saw this magical movie, I felt it cried out to be a musical,” Jerry Mitchell, who will direct and choreograph, said in a statement. Garry Marshall, who directed the movie, collaborated with the film’s screenwriter J.F. Lawton on the book before he died last year. Music and lyrics will come from Canadian singer Bryan Adams “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You” and his longtime collaborator Jim Vallance.
“Pretty Woman: The Musical” will have “the heart, humor, warmth and joy of the film,” said producer Paula Wagner. The show is the latest movie to make the transition to Broadway, joining the upcoming “The Band’s Visit,” “Mean Girls,” and “Frozen.” It will play a five-week engagement in Chicago this spring before opening next fall in a Nederlander theater yet to be named.
