Producers of "Suffs," the Tony Award-winning musical about the women's Suffrage movement of the early 1900s, have elected to close the show, with the final performance set for Jan. 5.

“Bringing the story of the suffs to the stage has been an honor and we are deeply grateful to our cast and company,” said producers Jill Furman and Rachel Sussman in a statement. “Watching audiences encounter the inspiring women of Suffs, many of whom they had never heard of before, has been extremely profound, especially in this election season.”

When the show, which features a book, music and lyrics by Shaina Taub closes, it will have played 24 previews and 301 regular performances at the Music Box Theatre. A national tour is set to launch in Seattle in September.

"Suffs," which tells of the friendships — and in some cases, the ends of friendships of the women involved in fighting for the right to vote — opened in April to mostly enthusiastic reviews. It also got six Tony nominations with wins for Taub's book and original musical score.

Among the other producers of the show is former first lady and onetime Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
