Today marks 31 years since Beatles front man John Lennon was murdered in Manhattan.

John Lennon became a superstar in the '60s when the Beatles took the world by storm, writing such hits such as “Love Me Do” and “Help!” Later, he made a solo career for himself with songs like “Imagine.”

On Dec. 8, 1980, Mark David Chapman, a 25-year-old deranged fan, shot John Lennon at the entrance to his apartment. His wife, Yoko Ono, scattered his ashes in Central Park where the Strawberry Fields memorial now sits.
