Amy Schumer: From ‘Last Comic Standing’ to ‘Inside Amy Schumer’

Amy Schumer returns April 21 with new episodes of her Comedy Central show, “Inside Amy Schumer.” She’s now a household name, of course, but the Rockville Centre-raised comedian’s first taste of national exposure was during the summer of 2007 when she placed fourth on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing.” Here are five things to know:
Schumer had been doing stand-up for a little more than three years when she auditioned for “Last Comic Standing.”
In one of the show’s challenge episodes, she and the other comics were driven to Medieval Times where they were told to dress up like court jesters and tell medieval-themed jokes to an audience (“Who’s getting pillaged tonight?”... “This is really exciting since I just lost my chastity belt . . . to my cousin.” )
Schumer made it to the 11th episode, where she received the lowest number of votes and subsequently became the first of the final four to leave the competition.
As the show said goodbye to her, a video montage of her journey was played. “This is just sort of so beyond my wildest dreams,” she said. “I’ve only been doing this for about 3½ years, but I feel like I have so much ahead of me, and I feel like I’m just going to keep getting better because I’m going to keep working at it.”
The winner of the season was Jon Reep, who has had a respectable post-“Last Comic Standing” career as a comedian and actor. But nowhere as spectacular, needless to say, as that of the fourth-place finalist.
