"Boston Blue" — the not-quite-spinoff of "Blue Bloods" starring Donnie Wahlberg as Danny Reagan — will land on Fridays at 10 p.m. this fall, CBS announced Wednesday. That was, of course, the longtime home of "Blue Bloods."
In addition, the network said Sonequa Martin-Green will join the new series, which CBS has described as an "expansion" of the "Blue Bloods" universe. She'll play a Boston PD detective paired with Reagan, who also joins the department. Her character, Lena Peters, is described by CBS as "the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family."
Martin-Green, a cast member of the early seasons of "The Walking Dead," gave a breakout performance that was a significant one for CBS' new streaming service back in 2017 — as Cmdr. Michael Burnham of the Starship Discovery, on the first "Star Trek" spinoff since "Enterprise" had wrapped in 2005.
During a CBS event announcing the schedule in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Wahlberg also seemed to indicate that there might be some tie-ins with "Blue Bloods," but did not elaborate. According to a Variety report, Wahlberg said, "You can’t have Danny without Reagans — there’ll be connective tissue. But we’re also going to get to discover a new family and carry on the tradition of telling their stories."
Martin-Green and Wahlberg both appeared at the CBS event where, according to Variety, the former "Blue Bloods" star said "One thing about ‘Blue Bloods’ and how beloved it was is because there are so many law enforcement families in this country. There’s not just the Reagans — they’re in every state, every city, every town, everywhere, and there are other families around that have stories to tell too. Danny’s story will continue the Reagan family."
"Blue Bloods" ended its 14-season run in December.
CBS' fall and midseason lineup will include a few more familiar names, both on- and off-screen. Another Dick Wolf alphabet series, "CIA," will join the Monday schedule as a companion to his "FBI." That will star Tom Ellis ("Lucifer") as "a fast-talking, rule-breaking loose cannon CIA case officer," per CBS.
Morena Baccarin (Vanessa from the "Deadpool" franchise) has also landed her own series in "Sheriff Country," a spinoff of "Fire Country" where her "straight-shooting sheriff" Mickey Fox was introduced this past season. The Brazilian-born actor has appeared in scripted TV before but this represents something of a long-awaited return, after runs in "Gotham," "Homeland" and "V."
Meanwhile, "Yellowstone's" Luke Grimes is also getting a midseason spinoff titled "Y: Marshals" — the "Y" apparently for "Yellowstone" — in which he returns as Kayce Dutton, who has joined "an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana."
No launch dates were announced for any of the new series, which also include the comedy "DMV," starring Tim Meadows.
