CBS to air two colorized episodes of ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’

On Sunday, Dec. 11, at 8 p.m., CBS will air two colorized episodes of “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” the 1961-66 sitcom that’s considered one of TV’s greatest shows. At 8 is “That’s My Boy??” (1963), in which Rob Petrie (Van Dyke) recalls the day he brought Ritchie (Larry Mathews) home from the hospital, followed at 8:30 by “Coast to Coast Big Mouth” (1965), in which Laura Petrie (Mary Tyler Moore) inadvertently reveals that Alan Brady (Carl Reiner) wears a toupee on TV. Here are five things to know about “The Dick Van Dyke Show”:
1. “Dick Van Dyke” was the last show that debuted in the 1960s to have its entire run filmed in black and white. The show was going to be shot in color for the sixth season, but the cast and producers decided to end its run after five years.
2. The writers’ office where Rob worked is a re-creation of the writers’ bullpen from “Your Show of Shows,” where Reiner worked as a writer. Rob Petrie was based on Reiner, while co-writer Buddy Sorrell (Morey Amsterdam) was based on “Your Show of Shows” comedy writer Mel Brooks.
3. Before Van Dyke got the role, Johnny Carson had been seriously considered to play Rob.
4. Danny Thomas recommended Moore for the role of Laura. She had performed a memorable audition for his sitcom, “Make Room for Daddy,” in 1960.
5. The Petries lived at 148 Bonnie Meadow Rd. in New Rochelle.
