Debbie Gibson, Tiffany to square off in Syfy flick
Merrick's Debbie Gibson and fellow 1980s teen-pop idol Tiffany may have been rivals during their MTV heyday, but now they're teaming up in a most unlikely venue: one of Syfy's ever-campy Saturday Original Movies, "Mega Python Vs Gatoroid."
Going into production later this month for a 2011 release, the movie finds Gibson, 39, and Tiffany, 38, together in the Florida Everglades, where alpha-predator pythons and alligators do actually battle each other in real life. Playing "a fanatical animal rights advocate" and "an overzealous park ranger," respectively, the two former teen queens also battle it out themselves.
"Only in my dreams have I been able to have a catfight with Debbie Gibson ... until now!" Tiffany says in a Syfy news release.
"They loved the idea of taking this perceived rivalry and having some fun with it," Tom Vitale, Syfy's executive vice president of programming and original movies, told The Hollywood Reporter.
He said the network devised the idea after Tiffany visited its offices and said she'd wanted to work with Gibson.
Gibson starred in last year's Syfy cult-hit "Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus."
