"Hot in Cleveland" -- otherwise known as just the latest credit for the incomparable Betty White -- will end at the end of this season, the sixth. TV Land has an official statement on the cancelation, which is at the end of this post.
The series helped usher TV Land into the "original production" world, but of greater note, it ushered a whole range of classic TV actors back into the primetime world... Wendie Malick, Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves... and one of the most classic TV actors of them all, White, who jumped aboard just as she was about to enter her nineties. (She is 92.)
Other great comic TV actors who got a lead role in their nineties? I'll get back to you on that...
The show -- about three TV industry vets forced to make a landing in Cleveland, which they decided was more hospitable than Hollywood, and therefore did what any fan of Cleveland and the Browns naturally and instantly understood (they stayed) -- has been a hit for TV Land, and has also had a knack for attracting guest actors. The list is long, but Joan Rivers, Susan Lucci and Regis Philbin come immediately to mind.
The statement:
"After five incredible seasons of Hot in Cleveland, the sixth season, currently in production, will be its last," TV Land president Larry W. Jones said. "It’s been an honor to work with Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick and the incomparable Betty White as well as our executive producers Suzanne Martin, Todd Milliner, Sean Hayes and the rest of our exceptional writers, production team and crew. The passion and talent they brought to the set each and every week over the past five years has put TV Land on the map as a network dedicated to quality original programming. We will continue to celebrate the show and are looking forward to a fantastic series finale."
