Emily Maynard accepted a proposal from Jef Holm Sunday night on ABC's "The Bachelorette," with the couple telling "Good Morning America" Monday that Holm is relocating to Charlotte, N.C., where Maynard lives with her 6-year-old daughter, Ricki.
"We really have become immediate best friends," Maynard, 26, said of her new fiance, "and I feel so comfortable around him. It's different from any relationship I've ever been in."
Holm, described by ABC as a 28-year-old social entrepreneur and skateboarder, said, "I'm going to move to Charlotte, but I'm going to get a separate place there, and we're just going to combine our lives. And I'm going to hang out with Ricki all the time and become a carpool dad."
Maynard accepted Holm's proposal on the finale of "The Bachelorette's" eighth season after first telling Arie Luyendyk Jr., her other final suitor, that she would not go on a planned final date with him. "You know how I felt about you from our first date," she told Luyendyk at the Curacao location of the finale taping. "I never thought I'd have to make a choice between you and anybody. I always thought it would be me and you. I'm sorry."
"I'm shocked," a visibly disappointed Luyendyk replied. "I completely thought we had something."
Soon afterward, Holm proposed to Maynard on bended knee. After a long moment, she replied, "Yes."
Maynard joked on "GMA," "I've taken a lot of heat" for the pause, explaining, "It was kind of a surprise because we never really talked about an engagement, even though I really should have known. But, really, I just wanted to soak in the moment and really make a decision from my heart and just take in the moment and remember it."
"I felt like I was sitting down there forever," Holm recalled. "But it was a big decision, and I hadn't told anyone that I as going to propose to her, including her. And so it came as a shock to her, totally."
Maynard said her daughter was "doing great. She's in West Virginia with my mom, getting spoiled rotten, and right now she knows that Jef is a huge part of my life and her life soon."
The couple has no definite wedding plans, though Maynard said she was looking at wedding dresses online and buying bridal magazines.
"We're just going to live our lives together" in Charlotte, said Holm, "and get accustomed [to] each other and plan a wedding. And then when we get married, [we'll] move in together and figure out where we want to be as a family."
