Lester Holt officially debuts as 'Nightly News' anchor

After four months as Brian Williams' interim replacement, Lester Holt made his debut last night as permanent anchor of NBC's "Nightly News." Williams was suspended in February for embellishing an incident that took place during his coverage of the 2003 Iraq War.
In an interview with several media outlets before the newscast, Holt discussed his vision for "Nightly News." "I want people to know me a little more in ways that I can't always express in a half-hour broadcast. That's the direction I think we are all going in," he told Variety. He said he also expects "Nightly News" to emphasize coverage of technology and Silicon Valley, and wants to make regular trips to anchor the broadcast from California.
Holt, 56, was named permanent anchor on Thursday, with Williams reassigned to MSNBC, starting in August. Holt told CNN on Monday that he had spoken to Williams on Thursday. "We had a really good conversation," he said. "Both of us quickly acknowledged that this has been an awkward few months, that neither of us ever wanted, but that nothing has come between us, and that we remain friends."
