Miley Cyrus to star in Woody Allen’s Amazon Prime series

Miley Cyrus has confirmed that she’ll star alongside Woody Allen in his much-anticipated series for Amazon Prime, which begins shooting in March.

According to a report by Deadline.com editor Mike Fleming, Allen has also cast actress-director-comedian Elaine May in the series.

But it is Cyrus, naturally, with the slightly bolder-faced name here, and the characteristically more hyperbolic confirmation notice:

In a posting Monday night on Instagram, she wrote in part, “Stoked to be in Woody Allen’s first series!!!!! . . . next to my bed for a few years now has been this portrait of W.A. & I was looking into his eyes when I got the call to be a part of the cast . . .” Cyrus added she looked forward to working alongside May.

Heck yeah: The six-part series will be a period comedy, set in the ’60s. Nothing beyond that is known.

Cyrus, 23, began her career on the small screen, as a child actress alongside her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, in the sitcom “Doc,” much later as Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana on the Disney Channel hit “Hannah Montana,” which wrapped in 2011. Notoriety arrived a couple years later at the MTV VMAs (Twerking? Recall?). The as-yet-untitled Allen series represents her first return to a regular role on TV — or a “streaming service,” to be technically precise — since “Hannah Montana” ended.

May, 83, first gained fame in the late 1950s and early 1960s as Mike Nichols’ comic improv partner. She hasn’t been in a film in 15 years, since appearing with Allen in his 2000 crime caper comedy, “Small Time Crooks.” Her screenwriter credits include “A New Leaf” (1971), “Heaven Can Wait”(1978) and “The Birdcage” (1996). She was also the writer-director of “Ishtar,” the 1987 movie that many regard as Hollywood’s quintessential flop.
