'NYPD Blue' sequel may be in the works, reports say

"NYPD Blue" may be back.

According to trade reports Wednesday, ABC has ordered a pilot for a sequel series that would follow the police-officer son of Andy Sipowicz, the NYPD homicide detective played by Dennis Franz in ABC's 1993-2005 hit. Theo Sipowicz, trying to earn his own detective's shield, will investigate his father's murder.

The pilot will be scripted by Matt Olmstead, an executive producer on "Chicago Fire," "Chicago Med" and "Chicago P.D.," and Nick Wootton, an executive producer of "Scorpion," both of whom had also served as executive producers on the original "NYPD Blue." Jesse Bochco, a producer-director on the original series — created by his late father, Steven Bochco, and David Milch — also will be an executive producer.

The character of Andy Sipowicz had three children. An adult son, Andy Jr., was killed during the run of the show. Sipowicz had a child each with his second and third wives: Theo, with Assistant District Attorney Sylvia Costas (Sharon Lawrence), and Matthew, with fellow detective Connie McDowell (Charlotte Ross). Sipowicz and McDowell also raised her adopted infant niece, Michelle.

"NYPD Blue" ran 12 seasons and was nominated for 84 Emmys. It won 20, including for outstanding drama series in 1995 and four for Franz as outstanding lead actor in a drama series.

The pilot is part of a wave of sequel and revival series, including "Fuller House," "Murphy Brown," "Roseanne" / "The Conners" and "Will & Grace," as well as reboots including "Dynasty" and "Magnum P.I."
