The sound of “Sirens” is hitting Southold, as that upcoming Netflix miniseries shoots in the North Fork town.

The production, which filmed at a private property on Oregon Road in the town’s hamlet of Cutchogue from Monday to Friday, plans to return to Southold for two additional five-day periods next month.

“Much of the filming, as I understand it, will be on a coastline or in the water,” says Southold Town Attorney Paul DeChance, adding, “There's no activity on a public beach. It's a private house and that private house has access to the Sound.” Some scenes take place at a beachside mansion and some at a yacht club.

Additionally, for a fee of $50,000, the town made its Recreation Center on Peconic Lane available as base camp, a production term for a facility providing parking and space for departments such as hair, makeup and craft services, which feeds the cast and crew.

During production, scheduled recreation activities have been transferred to the adjacent Peconic Lane Community Center, formerly the Peconic School. “We had to make sure we could schedule our events around [the production’s] schedule and their needs,” says Town Supervisor Al Krupski, whose family has worked Krupski Farms in Peconic for four generations.

Netflix and the town additionally agreed to have the Southold Town Annex, down Main Road from the Town Hall, available in case inclement weather forces a change in the shooting schedule.

While rain dates generally involve shooting interiors, the production’s plan here would be to shoot outside the building since, says DeChance, “Interestingly, there was rain associated with that” contingency scene. If utilized, the Annex would bring the town an additional $20,000.

The first leg of the production went smoothly, says Krupski. “I did speak to the chief of police twice about this, once after the first two days and once this morning [Friday], to see have there been any concerns or complaints to his department. And he hasn't had any.”

DeChance, interviewed separately, concurs. “We haven't gotten any complaints and I think that is significant in that it shows us this type of activity can occur without interfering with the everyday activities of the town’s residents.” Previous Southold shoots have included the 2020 Netflix movie “Lost Girls,” in which Kenney's Beach stood in for Gilgo Beach.

A dark comedy told over the course of a weekend, “Sirens” follows Devon (Meghann Fahy), whose sister Simone (Milly Alcock) appears obsessed with new employer Michaela Kell (Julianne Moore), a socialite philanthropist married to a billionaire (Kevin Bacon). When Devon cautions Simone about Kell’s cultish influence, Kell retaliates.

The cast also includes Glenn Howerton (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) and Josh Segarra (“She-Hulk,” “Abbott Elementary” and the USA Network's EMT comedy from 2014, also titled "Sirens").

Netflix is producing the eight-episode miniseries with LuckyChap Entertainment, of which actor Margot Robbie is a partner, and Quiet Coyote, the company of writer, showrunner and executive producer Molly Smith Metzler, who was nominated for a screenwriting Emmy Award for her 2021 Netflix miniseries “Maid.”

The streaming service, DeChance says, “has been very professional about this, and each of their representatives has indicated how pleased they are with the area they're in.”
