Report: Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig film Lifetime TV movie

Comedians Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig are reportedly co-starring in a Lifetime TV movie that pokes affectionate fun at other Lifetime TV movies.

But last night the film's fate seemed uncertain. Ferrell issued a statement saying the project had been scrapped due to his displeasure over news of the movie being leaked. However, thewrap.com, citing individuals with knowledge of the project, said the movie was still on.

The Hollywood Reporter said that the campy dramatic thriller "A Deadly Adoption" stars the "Saturday Night Live" alumni as a successful couple who take in a pregnant woman under an arrangement to adopt her unborn child. Circumstances take a dire turn in the time-honored manner of telefilms from the women's cable channel Lifetime, which this year celebrates the 25th anniversary of its original TV movies.

Jessica Lowndes ("90210") plays the expectant biological mother. The two-hour movie already has been filmed, the trade paper said, and will likely premiere in the early summer.

"A Deadly Adoption" came about, the Reporter explained, because Ferrell, currently starring with Kevin Hart in "Get Hard," is a fan of Lifetime movies. The network's made-for-television dramas traditionally share a sensibility one critic called "addicting, absurd, sometimes disturbing, always captivating . . . The overwrought acting; the incredible titles; the out-of-control drama; the plots that centered around all the terrible things that could happen, ever."

Lifetime cult-classics include Tori Spelling's "Mother, May I Sleep with Danger?" (1996) and Rachel Ward's "My Stepson, My Lover" aka "Love, Murder and Deceit" (1997).

Ferrell, 47, is an executive producer of the telefilm.

Wiig, 41, and Bill Hader starred in last year's "The Skeleton Twins," and she will next star in the film "The Diary of a Teenage Girl" and the TV series "Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp." She is also among the four eradicators of supernatural menaces in next year's all-female revival of the comedy "Ghostbusters."
