10 things you didn't know about The Wiggles
The popular children's group, The Wiggles, are headed to Long Island on Friday for their "Rock & Roll Preschool" tour.
NYCB Theatre at Westbury is hosting the Australian performers at 7 p.m. as they entertain preschoolers with favorites like "Rock-a-Bye Your Bear," "Fruit Salad" and "Do the Propeller." You may have watched a DVD or listened to one of their many songs, but how much do you really know about Anthony Field (Blue Wiggle), Emma Watkins (Yellow Wiggle), Simon Pryce (Red Wiggle) and Lachlan Gillespie (Purple Wiggle)? Here, we found 10 fun facts about The Wiggles:
1. Before founding The Wiggles in 1991, Anthony (Blue Wiggle) was a preschool teacher. During the 1980s, he was the guitarist in the Aussie rock band "The Cockroaches," who were a gold- and platinum-selling band, with a top 10 single, "She's the One."
2. Over the years, The Wiggles have attracted some high-profile parents who've brought their children to see them perform. These include Robert De Niro, Jerry Seinfeld, Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Rock, James Hetfield (Metallica), Chris Martin (Coldplay), Cate Blanchett, Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker, Duff McKagan (Guns N' Roses), Chuck Norris, Joel Madden and Nicole Richie.
3. Prior to becoming the Red Wiggle, Simon had a successful career in musical theater. He played the Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber's production of "The Phantom of the Opera" that toured throughout Asia for five years.
4. The Wiggles sold out 12 consecutive shows at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This become a question in the game Trivial Pursuit.
5. Lachy (Purple Wiggle) has always had a love of musical theater and has earned a bachelor of arts in musical theater at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. This is an exclusive performing arts college with such graduates as Hugh Jackman, Heath Ledger, Tim Minchin and Frances O'Connor.
6. When Emma (Yellow Wiggle) was 9 years old, she appeared alongside her sister as an audience member in The Wiggles' first-ever live video, "Wiggledance," which was released in 1997.
7. As the Australian press excitedly announced, Lachy has asked Emma to marry him. This will take place in a secret Outback location early next year.
8. Emma is the first female Wiggle and her popularity is such that she recently debuted her own TV series, "Emma!" on Australia's national broadcasting network, ABC. It will have its American debut on Hulu in the near future.
9. After more than 24 years of performing, The Wiggles have sold more than 23 million DVDs, 8 million books and 7 million albums. They've also performed to millions of fans across the globe.
10. Lachy is an accomplished piano player and Emma plays the drums. But Anthony can play the tin whistle, bagpipes, guitar, drums, trumpet, violin, percussion and the didgeridoo.
