Children's books with messages
Here are some books that are not only fun to read but teach kids lessons.
Kids may want to eat a plate of veggies right away once they hear the story of "How Martha Saved Her Parents From Green Beans" (Dial, $16.99) by David LaRochelle. The funny picture book tells how Martha won't eat her green beans until boot-wearing, mustache-twirling green beans come to town and wreak havoc. The only way to stop them is to start eating. For ages 5 to 8.
Only-children will get the message that "only doesn't have to mean lonely" in "Sometimes Just One Is Just Right" (Abbeville, $15.95) by Gayle Byrne. It's narrated by an only child who sees the pros of being the only one when he visits his cousin, who has three siblings. For ages 2 to 8.
The self-published "The Adventures of Bella & Harry: Let's Visit Jerusalem!" ($16.95) by Lisa Manzione is the newest and tenth in a series of picture books geared to children ages 5 to 10 that follows two Chihuahuas as they travel to major sightseeing venues and teach geography. Other cities in the series include London, Barcelona, Cairo and Istanbul.
