Earth Day is Tuesday, April 22, which makes it the perfect time to talk to your children about protecting the environment. Teaching kids not to litter, to recycle and to not waste materials may sometimes be challenging, but fun, family-friendly activities are the perfect way to help them celebrate the day.

Here, a few Earth Day events for kids around Long Island:

Our Changing World - Earth Day Program at the Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City) on Tuesday from 1 to 3 p.m. An Earth Day celebration honoring vulnerable or endangered plants and animals. Make Earth-friendly resolutions to conserve nature and more. Price: Free with museum admission ($12).

Earth Day Celebration at Quogue Library (90 Quogue St., Quogue) on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Children are welcome to decorate a pot, plant and enjoy a snack. Registration is required. Price: Free.

Earth Day Craft at Huntington Library (338 Main St., Huntington) on Tuesday from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. A story and a craft for kids in grades K-2; must register. Price: Free.

Earth Day at Downs Farm Preserve (23800 Rte. 25, Cutchogue) on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Live animal demonstrations, nature-related games, arts and crafts, guided nature walks, music and more to celebrate Earth Day. Price: Free, donations accepted.

Earth Day Is For the Birds at Sweetbriar Nature Center (62 Eckernkamp Dr., Smithtown) on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Kids can meet local birds and walk through the woodlands to look for them. Price: $6.

Earth Day Celebration: Recycled Art at Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium (180 Little Neck Rd., Centerport) on Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon. Children in grades K-2 can learn about whales and dolphins and make a recycled functional piece of art. Registration is required. Price: $30.
