Family-friendly performances on Long Island in August
Children love watching their favorite characters come to life on stage, and there's no shortage of theatrical events on Long Island. Since many of the shows require some forethought, here's a sampling of family-friendly shows throughout August to help you plan a fun-filled day.
Seussical Jr. at Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts (71 E. Main St., Patchogue) on Fridays and Saturdays through Aug. 10 at 10:30 a.m. A fun, interactive performance based on the stories of Dr. Seuss. Price: $10-$15.
Pinkalicious The Musical at Smithtown Center for the Performing Arts (2 E. Main St., Smithtown) on Saturdays and Sundays through Aug. 25 at 11 a.m. A musical based on the popular children's book about a girl who loves the colors pink, recommended for ages 2-10. Price: $15.
The Frog Prince at Theatre Three (412 Main St., Port Jefferson) on Friday, Aug. 9, and Aug. 16 at 11 a.m. and Saturday, Aug. 10 and Aug. 17 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. A pompous prince, a beautiful princess and the Frog King come together for a fun, family musical. Price: $10.
Half Note with Daniel Kelly at the Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City) on Friday, Aug. 2, and 16 at 1:30 p.m. Children ages 3 and older can journey through slapstick comedy, jazz, classical and silent film music. Price: $5 with museum admission ($12).
Robin Hood, The Musical at Take-One Performing Arts Academy (1021 Portion Rd., Farmingville) on Saturday, Aug. 3, and Aug. 10 at 1 p.m. A children's theatrical production of this classic movie. Price: $11.
Rapunzel at BroadHollow Theatre Company (700 Hempstead Tpke., Elmont) on Friday, Aug. 2, and Thursday, Aug. 8, at 1:30 p.m. Watch along as Rapunzel lets down her long hair. Price: $10, $12 at the door.
Jack and the Beanstalk at John W. Engeman Theater (250 Main St., Northport) starting on Saturdays in August (starting Aug. 10) at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 10:30 a.m. Based on the famous fable, this performance features Jack and a giant beanstalk. Price: $15.
Children's Theater: Pirates of Treasure Island at Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium (180 Little Neck Rd., Centerport) on Saturdays and Sundays through Aug. 25 at 1 p.m. Follow the adventures of young Jamie who falls heir to a treasure map and soon sails to Treasure Island with a crew of pirates -- chosen from the audience. Price: $10, $8 children, free ages 3 and younger.
Beauty and the Beast at Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City) on Saturdays through Aug. 17 with shows at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 18, at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Based on the 1991 Disney film, a beautiful woman learns to love a prince who turned into a beast. Price: $12.
Summer Arts Festival: BAM Percussion! at Heckscher Park (2 Prime Ave., at Rte. 25A, Huntington) on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 7:30 p.m. Sketch comedy meets high intensity percussion in this family-friendly performance. Price: Free.
National Marionette Theatre: Peter and the Wolf at John Drew Theater at Guild Hall (158 Main St., East Hampton) on Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 5 p.m. Set in the turn-of-the-century Russia, this folk tale is set to music by Prokofiev about how Peter captures a wolf. Price: $16, $13 for children younger than 12.
Peter Pan at NYCB Theatre at Westbury (960 Brush Hollow Rd., Westbury) on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 11 a.m. Join Peter, Wendy, Captain Hook and the whole gang on a journey to "Neverland." Price: $14.95.
Story Pirates at John Drew Theater, Guild Hall (158 Main St., East Hampton) on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 5 p.m. A children's show featuring pirates. Price: $16 for adults, $13 for children 12 and younger.
Jim West's Dinosaurs at Gateway Playhouse (215 South Country Rd., Bellport) on Friday, Aug. 23, at 10:30 a.m. Get up close and personal with dinosaurs. Price: $10-$15.
Wild World of Animals at John Drew Theater at Guild Hall (158 Main St., East Hampton) on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 5 p.m. Enjoy a live performance with reptiles, mammals and birds. Price: $16, $13 for children younger than 12.
