Fun books for kids ages 2-5
Kidsday reporters from Florence Izzo and Nicole Mammolito's classes at H.B. Thompson Middle School in Syosset read more than 100 books this spring. They prepared a suggested summer reading list for kids 14 and younger. Their book reviews will be running all week in Kidsday.
'DUCK AND GOOSE GO TO THE BEACH'

The book "Duck and Goose Go to the Beach" (Schwartz & Wade Books) is a great way to learn a lesson. This fiction book teaches readers not to judge something until they try it. In the book, Duck wants to go to the beach, and Goose thinks it is a bad idea -- he wants to stay where he is. Later on in the book, Goose goes to the beach and tries it out and soon learns that he loves it. This book is great for children who are starting to read. It is beneficial in two ways -- it teaches lessons and entertains readers. The theme of the story is not to judge something until you try it. Tad Hills was able to teach the lesson in a fun way that kids will enjoy.

'VEGGIES WITH WEDGIES'

"Veggies With Wedgies" (Little Simon) is an entertaining story about vegetables wearing underwear for the first time. Throughout the story, the farmer is concerned about why his underwear is missing. Will the farmer punish the vegetables? Will the vegetables keep hiding it from the farmer? It is a hilarious and creative story. I think other kids will love this book because it allows their imaginations to come to life.

'R IS FOR ROBOT: A NOISY ALPHABET'

"R Is for Robot: A Noisy Alphabet" (Penguin Group) is a book that will teach kids the sounds that letters of the alphabet can make. Some fun sounds they will learn are yoink, zap, squeak and ticktock. This book will teach them the meaning of onomatopoeia. This is a great book because I don't think kids are taught what literary devices are these days. This book will inform them with fun pictures and teach them what the real meaning of letters is.

'PARDON ME!'

"Pardon Me!" (Simon & Schuster) teaches kids to mind their own property but to not be selfish and to share. Different animals try to stay on the bird's lily pad while the bird is gone, but they are not supposed to be there. Nobody turns the other animals down because they all ask politely. When the bird gets back, he is furious, so he screams at them, telling them to leave, so they do. Then, an alligator comes and eats the bird while he is sitting on his lily pad. This book is good for little kids because they are just learning how to share and they are learning their manners.

'BOOM SNOT TWITTY'

"Boom Snot Twitty" (Viking: the Penguin Group) is a story about three unlikely friends and three different ways of being in the world. Throughout the story, Boom, Snot and Twitty are shown doing different things with each character accepting his or her differences.
